Background: This is a systematic review and meta-analysis of emotional and behavioral problems among Italian community adolescents in the last 20 years, as assessed through the ASEBA questionnaires CBCL 6-18, YSR 11-18 and TRF 6-18. Research questions address: (1) pooled means of problems' scores in questionnaires scales; (2-3) variations in scores according to sociodemographic and time-related factors, and studies' quality; (4) trends in research with ASEBA instruments along with other outcomes, e.g., psychopathological symptoms. Methods: A systematic literature review of Scopus, EBSCO, PubMed, Web of Science, and ProQuest databases using the PRISMA 2020 guidelines was conducted on November, 2021, and of grey literature on December, 2021. The quality of studies was assessed through the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Results: Forty-four studies were eligible for the systematic review, of which 34 were included for meta-analysis. Results showed that: (1) emotional-behavioral problems were higher when assessed by the CBCL and lower when assessed by the YSR compared to normative data; (2) there were no gender and age differences, except for higher scores of Anxious/Depression symptoms, in girls. (3) internalizing and attention problems increased over the last two decades. (4) major trends of Italian research investigate adolescents' emotional behavioral problems concerning attachment, comorbid symptoms, especially internet addictions, and eating disorders. Discussion: Despite some limitations (e.g., low-medium quality of most studies, no data on the TRF, under-representation of some geographical areas, some search-related choices), these data provides Italian practitioners and international researchers of some parameter to evaluate Italian adolescents emotional-behavioral problems. The Eyberg Child Behavior Inventory (ECBI) is a frequently used measure to assess interfering behaviors in children and psychometric properties have recently been examined in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). There is a need to confirm the identified factors and examine the factor structure in a racially/ethnically diverse, community-based sample. The current study conducts a psychometric analysis of the ECBI in a sample of children with ASD receiving publicly-funded mental health services. Data were collected from 201 children with ASD ages 5-13 years (60% Hispanic/Latinx) participating in a community effectiveness trial. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated poor model fit using previously identified factors and a new four-factor solution was identified. Clinical and research implications of these findings are discussed.

OBJECTIVE: To compare dental utilization and expenditures between children with and without behavioral health (BH) diagnoses in an accountable care organization. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study used enrollment and claims data of Medicaid-enrolled children in Ohio. Children with 7 years of continuous enrollment from 2013 to 2019 were included. We calculated 5 dental utilization outcomes: 1) Diagnostic only visits, 2) Preventive visits, 3) Treatment visits, 4) Treatment visits under general anesthesia (GA), and 5) Orthodontic visits. Total 7-year cumulative expenditures were calculated for each outcome. Multivariable logistic regression models were run for each outcome adjusting for demographics and medical comorbidities. RESULTS: Among 77,962 children, 23% had ≥1 BH diagnosis. No utilization differences were noted between children with and without BH for diagnostic only visits, treatment visits, and orthodontic visits. BH status modified the likelihood of having a preventive visit and dental GA visits based on medical comorbidity. For example, children with BH diagnoses had significantly lower odds of a preventive visit (eg, non-complex chronic comorbidity: odds ratio [OR] = 0.87, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.85-0.89), and significantly higher odds of a dental treatment under general anesthesia visit (eg, non-chronic comorbidity: OR = 3.69, 95% CI: 3.26-4.18). The total cumulative dental expenditures were $10.5M greater for children with BH. CONCLUSIONS: Children with BH diagnoses were significantly less likely to have preventive visits and more likely to have dental GA visits, which was expensive. Early identification and intervention could alter treatment approaches, improve care, reduce risk of harm, and achieve cost-savings within a pediatric accountable care organization.

Objective The prevalence of emotional and behavioral problems reaches 30% of school-age Brazilians. Management by teachers can reinforce such difficulties and, therefore, it is essential to assess interventions to provide them with the best tools available. In this study, it was aimed to present the development and implementation of the Facilitating Contact with Students Program was implemented in early grade teachers. Method The process of two modalities of this Program was evaluated: G1 (with a full program) and G2 (with a partial program, without the cognitive model contents, only instruction about behavioral management techniques and socioemotional support). Results The G1 gave better scores to the intervention on the importance and usefulness of the contents. Conclusion The teacher's knowledge regarding the cognitive model is relevant for the modification of disruptive behaviors of students in the classroom.


Objetivo A prevalência de problemas emocionais e de comportamento chega a 30% em brasileiros em idade escolar. O manejo pelos professores pode reforçar tais dificuldades e, portanto, é fundamental avaliar intervenções para instrumentalizá-los. Objetivou-se apresentar o desenvolvimento e a implementação do Programa Facilitando o conVívio com Alunos em docentes de séries iniciais. Método Avaliou-se o processo de duas modalidades desta intervenção: G1, recebeu a intervenção de forma completa, e G2, recebeu a intervenção de forma parcial, priorizando-se a instrução sobre técnicas comportamentais de manejo e apoio socioemocional e excluindo-se o conteúdo do modelo cognitivo. Resultados O G1 avaliou melhor a intervenção quanto a importância e utilidade do conteúdo. Conclusão O conhecimento do modelo cognitivo por parte do professor é relevante para a modificação de comportamentos perturbadores de alunos em sala de aula.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The association between social adversity and externalizing behavioral problems in children is well-documented. What is much less researched are biological mechanisms that may mediate such relationships. This study examines the hypothesis that low blood lead mediates the relationship between social adversity and child externalizing behavior problems. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, participants were 131 children aged 11-12 years (mean = 11.90) from Philadelphia, US. A venous fasting blood sample was taken and analyzed for blood lead levels. A social adversity index was calculated based on 10 total indicators derived from a psychosocial interview of the parent and official neighborhood data, while child behavior outcomes (internalizing and externalizing behavior) were assessed using both parent-report and child self-report. RESULTS: The mean blood lead level was 2.20 µg/dL. Both relatively higher blood lead levels and higher social adversity scores were associated with higher levels of parent-reported and child self-reported externalizing behaviors. Additionally, blood lead mediated the relationship between social adversity and child-reported externalizing behavior (Indirect effect: B = 0.03, 95% CI: 0.004, 0.09) and partially mediated the relationship between social adversity and parent-reported externalizing behavior (Indirect Effect: B = 0.03, 95% CI: 0.01, 0.07). CONCLUSION: To our knowledge, this study is the first to suggest that blood lead levels play a mediating role in the relationship between externalizing behavior problems and social adversity. Findings have potentially important implications for public health and environmental regulation as well as understanding biological mechanisms that link social inequality with health outcomes, especially in youth from low-income, urban areas.

Objetivo: Caracterizar los modos de vida de las personas autistas del centro Medicina Integral en la ciudad de Cartagena-Colombia, a través de la epidemiología crítica en su vertiente de la determinación social de la salud. Metodología: Se realizó utilizando técnicas cuali-cuantitativas como la encuesta, la entrevista, la revisión bibliográfica-documental y la observación natural. La muestra estuvo constituida por 105 familias de personas autistas asistentes al centro Medicina Integral en la ciudad Cartagena Colombia y los resultados fueron procesados mediante el software de procesamiento de datos SPSS STATISTICS 25. Resultados: a nivel de los modos de vida de las familias de las personas autistas, las categorías del dominio general determinan la dinámica de los modos de vida. En las categorías de este dominio como la etnia, la clase social y el género del responsable familiar, predominaron la raza mestiza, la inserción social baja y el género masculino. A nivel educativo-laboral, hubo mayor tendencia a trabajos del nivel medio, bajo subordinación e informalidad. El acceso a salud es bueno, pues más del 90 % goza de este servicio en la cobertura. A nivel de exposiciones, son variados los procesos, se evidencian pocos apoyos, contaminación ambiental socioespacial en las familias, inequidad en el territorio, patologización y mitos acerca de la condición de autismo. Conclusiones: se pudo concluir que el autismo en Cartagena Colombia no es una condición aislada, pues se encuentra subsumido bajo sistemas del orden general, particular y singular, que condicionan al individuo y a sus familias


Goal: This work focused its objective on characterizing the ways of life of autistic people at the Integral Medicine Center in the city of Cartagena-Colombia, through critical epidemiology in its aspect of social determination of health. Methodology: It was carried out using qualitative-quantitative techniques such as the survey, the interview, the bibliographical-documentary review and natural observation. The sample consisted of 105 families of autistic people attending the Integral Medicine Center in the city of Cartagena, Colombia, and the results were processed using the SPSS STATISTICS 25 data processing software. Results: at the level of the lifestyles of the families of the autistic people, it is seen how the categories of the general domain determine the dynamics of lifestyles. In the characterization of categories of a particular order such as ethnicity, social class and the gender of the family leader, the mestizo race, low social insertion and the male gender prevailed. At the educational-labor level, the tendency to work at the middle level under subordination and informality with technical and basic studies predominates in more than 60%. Access to health is good, since more than 90% enjoy this service. At the level of exhibitions, the processes are varied, few supports are evident, socio-spatial environmental contamination in families, inequity in the territory, pathologization and myths about the condition of autism. Conclusions: it was possible to conclude that autism in Cartagena Colombia is not an isolated condition, but is subsumed under systems of the general, particular and singular order, which

ABSTRACT Objective: To screen children under 24 months of age for neuropsychomotor and social-emotional development in a municipality of the Brazilian semi-arid region, using the Survey of Well-Being of Young Children (SWYC) scale. Methods: This is a quantitative cross-sectional study with a non-probabilistic sample, involving children aged 1 to 24 months and their respective mothers, recruited from primary care services in the municipality of Picos, Piauí, Northeastern Brazil. The screening for neuropsychomotor and social-emotional development using the SWYC scale also provided information about the family context. In addition, we administered a questionnaire to assess the children's demographic and socioeconomic factors. Descriptive data analysis was performed. Results: The sample consisted mostly of adult mothers (84.0%), with more than 8 years of schooling (83.3%), belonging to the C, D, and E socioeconomic classes (75.3%). The prevalence of suspected cases of delayed neuropsychomotor development and social-emotional changes was 12.7 and 42.2%, respectively. Conclusions: The results point to the existence of children at risk of delayed development, particularly in the social-emotional domain, reaffirming the need to adopt child development screening as a health service routine, with the implementation of appropriate intervention programs.


RESUMO Objetivo: Realizar a triagem para desenvolvimento neuropsicomotor e socioemocional em crianças menores de 24 meses, em município da região do semiárido brasileiro, utilizando a escala Survey of Wellbeing of Young Children (SWYC). Métodos: Estudo transversal, com abordagem quantitativa, amostra não proba­bilística, envolvendo crianças entre 1 e 24 meses e suas respectivas mães, selecionadas em serviços de saúde da atenção básica do município de Picos, Piauí. A triagem do desenvolvimento neuropsicomotor e socioemocional com uso da escala SWYC também forneceu informações sobre o contexto familiar. Além disso, utilizou-se questionário para avaliar fatores demográficos e socioeconômicos das crianças. Realizou-se a análise descritiva dos dados. Resultados: A amostra foi constituída de mães em sua maioria adultas (84,0%), com mais de oito anos de estudo (83,3%), pertencentes às classes socioeconômicas C, D e E (75,3%). A prevalência de casos suspeitos de atraso no desenvolvimento neuropsicomotor e de alterações socioemocionais foi de 12,7 e 42,2%, respectivamente. Conclusões: Os resultados apontam a existência de crianças em risco de desenvolvimento, sobretudo socioemocional, reafirmando a necessidade da adoção da triagem para desenvolvimento infantil como rotina nos serviços de saúde, com a implantação de programas de intervenção apropriados.

Animal-assisted interventions (AAI) have been showing significant results in human health promotion. This study aimed to develop and present validity evidence of the Children-Dog Interaction Scale (CDIS) for the Brazilian population. Items were developed and evaluated by experts. Parents of children between 2 and 12 years old (n = 118) completed the CDIS and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). Exploratory Factor Analysis generated two dimensions: Affective Interactions (23 items, α = .89) and Educational and Punitive Interactions (8 items, α = .65) between children and dogs. The significant correlations between CDIS and SDQ dimensions indicated that the interaction between children and dogs could be a significant variable for assessing children's behavioral problems. We concluded that CDIS is a valid and reliable instrument to assess children-dog interactions and screen children for IAA participation.


As Intervenções Assistidas por Animais (IAAs) apresentam resultados expressivos para a promoção da saúde humana. O objetivo deste artigo foi construir e apresentar evidências de validade da Escala de Interação entre Crianças e Cães (EICC) para a população brasileira. O instrumento foi desenvolvido a partir da literatura e submetido a análise de juízes, o qual respondido por 118 pais de crianças entre 2 e 12 anos de idade, juntamente com o Questionário de Capacidades e Dificuldades (SDQ). A partir da análise fatorial exploratória, foram extraídos os fatores Interação Afetiva (α = .89), 23 itens e Interação Educativa e Punitiva (α = .65), 8 itens. As correlações significativas entre dimensões da EICC e do SDQ indicam que a interação entre crianças e cães domésticos pode ser uma variável importante para a avaliação de problemas comportamentais. Conclui-se que a EICC apresenta bons índices de validade e confiabilidade e pode ser usada para a triagem de crianças.


Las intervenciones asistidas por animales (IAA) han mostrado resultados significativos para la promoción de la salud humana. El objetivo fue construir y presentar evidencia de validez de la Escala de Interacción entre Niños y Perros (EICC) para la población brasileña. El instrumento desarrollado a partir de la literatura y sometido al análisis de jueces, fue respondido por 118 padres de niños de entre 2 y 12 años, junto con el Cuestionario de Capacidades y Dificultades (SDQ). Del análisis factorial exploratorio, se extrajeron los factores interacción afectiva (23 elementos, α = ,89) y interacción educativa y punitiva (ocho elementos, α = ,65) Correlaciones significativas entre las dimensiones del EICC y el SDQ indican que la interacción entre los niños y los perros domésticos puede ser una variable importante para evaluar los problemas de comportamiento. Se concluye que el instrumento tiene buenos índices de validez y confiabilidad, y se puede utilizar para la detección de niños.

Background: Type 1 diabetes in young children is a heavy parental burden. As part of pilot phase of the KIDSAP01 study, we conducted a baseline assessment in parents to study the association between hypoglycemia fear, parental well-being and child behavior. Methods: All parents were invited to fill in baseline questionnaires: hypoglycemia fear survey (HFS), WHO-5, Epworth Sleepiness Scale and Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). Results: 24 children (median age: 5-year, range 1-7 years, 63% male, mean diabetes duration: 3 ± 1.7 years) participated. 23/24 parents filled out the questionnaires. We found a higher score for the hypoglycemia fear behavior 33.9 ± 5.6 compared to hypoglycemia worry 34.6 ± 12.2. Median WHO-5 score was 16 (8 - 22) with poor well-being in two parents. Median daytime sleepiness score was high in five parents (>10). For six children a high total behavioral difficulty score (>16) was reported. Pro social behavior score was lower than normal in six children (<6). Parental well-being was negatively associated with HFS total (r = - 0.50, p <.05) and subscale scores (r = - 0.44, p <.05 for HFS-Worry and HFS-Behavior), child behavior (r = - 0.45, p = .05) and positively with child age and diabetes duration (r = 0.58, p <.01, r = 0.6, p <.01). HFS, parental well-being nor daytime sleepiness are associated with the HbA1c. Conclusion: Regular screening of parental well-being, hypoglycemia fear and child behavior should be part of routine care to target early intervention.

BACKGROUND: Synthetic phenols and phthalates can interfere with biological pathways involved in brain development. Despite the high within-subject temporal variability of urinary concentrations observed for their metabolites, studies investigating effects of phenols and phthalates on child behaviour often relied on a limited number of spot biospecimens to assess exposure. Besides, the majority did not consider mixture effects. OBJECTIVES: To study the combined effect of prenatal exposure to synthetic phenols and phthalates on child behaviour using repeated exposure measurements. METHODS: We assessed concentrations of 12 phenols, 13 phthalate and 2 non-phthalate plasticizer metabolites in within-subject pools of multiple urine samples (median = 21 samples per individual pool) collected at two distinct time points during pregnancy in 416 mother-child pairs from the French SEPAGES cohort. Child behaviour was evaluated at two years using the Child Behaviour Checklist 1.5-5 (CBCL). Associations between a mixture of biomarkers of exposure and externalizing and internalizing behaviour scores were studied using adjusted Weighted Quantile Sum (WQS) regressions with a repeated holdout validation (100 repetitions). RESULTS: The positive WQS indexes were associated with both the externalizing and internalizing behaviour scores in the whole population, indicating greater risk of behavioural problems. Stratification for child sex suggested stronger associations in girls than boys. On average, girls externalizing and internalizing scores increased by 3.67 points (95% CI: 1.24, 6.10) and 2.47 points (95 %CI: 0.60, 4.33) respectively, for an increase of one tertile in the WQS index, compared with 1.70 points (95 %CI: -0.42, 3.81) and 1.17 points (95 %CI: -0.50, 2.84) in boys. Main contributors for the associations observed in girls were bisphenol A (weight of 18%), triclosan (17%) and monoethyl phthalate (MEP, 15%) for the externalizing score and MEP (19%), mono-benzyl phthalate (MBzP, 19%) and mono-n-butyl phthalate (MnBP, 16%) for the internalizing score. DISCUSSION: Our results suggest adverse associations between in utero exposure to a mixture of phenols and phthalates and child behaviour, mainly in girls. Public health consequences may be substantial due to the widespread exposure of the population to these compounds.

Resumo Os comportamentos externalizantes dizem de um conjunto de reações impulsivas que, exteriorizadas por crianças (ou adolescentes), produzem conflitos e, em padrão repetitivo e persistente, são associados a síndromes psicopatológicas e transtornos. Este artigo tem o objetivo de revisão de literatura sobre o tema, nos três eixos disciplinares da Saúde Coletiva. Segue o método de revisão sistemática, com enfoque empírico e formato narrativo, tomando a ciência como prática social e levantando aspectos qualitativos de literatura produzida entre 2009 e 2019. Os conhecimentos produzidos trazem recortes importantes sobre o tema, porém, o panorama alcançado revela um distanciamento discursivo entre os eixos da epidemiologia e das ciências sociais em saúde, aproximados precariamente no eixo da política, planejamento e gestão em saúde. Os modos de considerar a criança nas pesquisas se dão com o silenciamento infantil, priorizando percepções dos adultos sobre as crianças. Chega-se a considerações sobre a importância de uma efetiva interdisciplinaridade e de uma pedagogia da transdisciplinaridade capaz de transcender o lugar das especialidades e de reconhecer a criança, com a valorização das suas práticas e saberes, como ator central do conhecimento acerca de si mesma.


Abstract The externalizing behaviors refer to a set of impulsive reactions that exteriorized by children (or adolescents) produce conflicts and, in a repetitive and persistent pattern, are associated with psychopathological syndromes and disorders. This article has the objective of empirical review on the subject, in three disciplinary axes of Public Health. It follows the systematic review method, with an empirical focus and narrative format, taking science as social practice and raising qualitative aspects of literature produced between 2009 and 2019. The knowledge produced brings important cuts on the subject, however, the panorama reached reveals a discursive distance between the axes of epidemiology and of the social science, precariously approximated in the axis of health planning. The ways of considering the child in the research are with child silencing, prioritizing adults' perceptions about children. We come to considerations about the importance of effective interdisciplinarity and a pedagogy of transdisciplinarity capable of transcending the place of specialties and of recognizing the child, with the appreciation of his practices and knowledge, as the central actor of knowledge about himself.

Abstract The aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate factors associated with dental anxiety in children treated under moderate sedation. Prior to treatment, each child's dental anxiety was evaluated using the modified Venham Picture Test (VPT). Interviews were also conducted with parents/guardians to gather information on the child's dental anxiety (Corah's Dental Anxiety Scale [DAS]), age and sex, shyness or anxiety in the presence of strangers, and dental history, as well as socioeconomic factors. All the children were sedated, and had at least one tooth restored using the atraumatic restorative treatment technique. Child behavior was assessed using the Frankl scale. Data analysis involved descriptive statistics and bivariate tests. The median VPT score was 2.0 (range: 0 to 8). Children who were shy in the presence of strangers (yes: median 2.0 [0-8]; no: 0.5 [0-4]; p = 0.018), and those with negative behavior during dental care (negative: 3.0 [0-8]; positive: 1.0 [0-8]; p = 0.014) had greater anxiety. The child's dental anxiety was associated with the mother's education level (≤ 8 years: 4 [2-7]; > 8 years: 1 [0-8]; p = 0.016). The dental anxiety of children treated under sedation is associated with negative behavior, shyness, and the mother's education level.

Background. Overweight and obesity arise from a complex range of genetic, environmental, behavioral, educational, and socioeconomic factors. The present study explored the sedentary practices and some life habits related to health among children from the school population of Uruguaiana (Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil). Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted to characterize the life habits of the school boys and girls from fourth grade (9-10 years old). Results: A total of 470 fourth-grade boys and girls (9-10 years old) participated in the study. As regards the variables linked to habits, 24% of the boys and girls answered they had not had breakfast the day they completed the questionnaire and 51.8% stated they did not have breakfast any given day of the week. Regarding sedentary habits, 25.3% of children watched TV or played video games five or more hours a day and 9% rarely played sports with their parents or caregivers. Statistical significance was recorded between "number of hours watching TV and playing video games" and "playing sports with parents or caregivers" (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Association between the times spent watching TV or playing video games and the practice of physical exercise in the family proves once again the importance of the family in education for the health of children. The school provides direct access to schoolchildren and their parents to launch numerous health education programs.

BACKGROUND: Spanking is associated with detrimental outcomes for young children. Research shows that spanking is more commonly used in low-income households. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether economic hardship, measured by household income-to-poverty ratio at the time of the child's birth, moderated the longitudinal associations between maternal spanking and child externalizing behavior problems during the first nine years of childhood. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Mother-child pairs (N = 4,149) from a cohort study of urban families in 20 US cities. METHODS: Cross-lagged path models examined associations between maternal spanking and externalizing behavior when children were between the ages of 1 and 9. Multigroup analyses examined whether income-to-poverty ratio moderated these associations. RESULTS: Bivariate analyses showed that income-to-poverty ratio was associated with child externalizing behavior problems at each time point; income-to-poverty ratio was associated with maternal spanking at age 3 only. Longitudinal path model results indicated that, for low- and middle-income groups, maternal spanking at each age had significant associations with child externalizing behavior at each subsequent age. For the high-income group, maternal spanking at age 1 and age 3 had significant associations with child externalizing behavior at each subsequent age; however, spanking at age 5 was not associated with child externalizing behavior at age 9. CONCLUSIONS: Spanking is disadvantageous for children at all income levels, with more persistent effects in low- and middle-income families. For higher-income families, the associations of maternal spanking with child externalizing behavior problems may be attenuated as child age increases. Regardless of income level, parents should be advised against spanking.

BACKGROUND: At present, clinicians diagnose that the clinical diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children is mainly on the basis of the information provided by their parents, the behaviour of children in clinical clinics and the assessments of clinical rating scales and neuropsychological tests. Notably, no unified standard exists currently for analysing the results of various measurement tools for diagnosing ADHD. Therefore, clinicians interpret the results of clinical rating scales and neuropsychological tests entirely based on their clinical experience. METHODS AND SUBJECTS: To provide guidance for clinicians on how to analyse the results of various clinical assessment tools when diagnosing ADHD, this study assessed children with ADHD and children in the control group using two clinical assessment scales-parent rating scale (PSQ) and Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL)-and one neuropsychological test (Integrated Visual and Auditory Continuous Performance Testing). The two-sample t-test (FDR correction) screened the parameters of the three assessment tools with significant inter-group differences. LibSVM was used to establish a classification prediction model for analysing the accuracy of ADHD prediction using parameters of the three assessment tools and weight values of each parameter for classification prediction. RESULTS: A total of 19 parameters (16 from clinical rating scales, 3 from neuropsychological tests) with significant inter-group differences were screened. The accuracy of classification modelling was higher for the clinical rating scales (61.635%) than for the neuropsychological test (59.784%), whereas the accuracy of classification modelling was higher for the clinical rating scales combined with the neuropsychological test (70.440%) than for the former two parameters alone. The three parameters with the highest weight values were learning problem (0.731), hyperactivity/impulsivity (0.676) and activity capacity (0.569). The three parameters with the lowest weight values are integrated control force (0.028), visual attention (0.028) and integrated attention (0.034). CONCLUSION: Our study findings indicate that the diagnosis of ADHD should be based on multidimensional assessment. For a more accurate diagnosis of ADHD, assessments and that more assessment parameters should be developed on the basis of different dimensions of physiology or psychology in the future to obtain a more accurate diagnosis of ADHD. Furthermore, the predictive model for ADHD may improve our understanding and help in optimisation of the treatment of such a condition.

The socioeconomic status (SES) of parents has been reported to have a crucial impact on emotional competence in childhood. However, studies have largely been carried out in developed countries and in children in a specific age range, and it is not clear whether the effect of the SES of parents varies by age. The objective of this study was to investigate the psychopathological profile (including externalizing and internalizing problems) of children aged 7, 9, and 11 years old with low SES in a developing country (Ecuador). The study included 274 children (139 boys and 135 girls), who were divided between medium-SES (n = 133) and low-SES (n = 141) groups. Data were gathered on socioeconomic and anthropometric variables of the children, and the parents completed the Child Behavior Check-List (CBCL). In comparison to the medium-SES group, children in the low-SES group obtained higher scores for internalizing and externalizing symptoms and for total problems, and they obtained lower scores for social competence skills. The housing risk index and school competence were the two main predictors of internalizing and externalizing problems in this population.

Income poverty, material deprivation, and subjective financial stress are three distinct dimensions of economic hardship. The majority of the theoretical and empirical literature on the effects of economic hardship on children has treated material deprivation and subjective financial stress as only mediators of the effects of income poverty, not considering the independent effects of each dimension or the effects of their combinations. Using nationally representative, longitudinal data from the Millennium Cohort Study on more than 18,000 families in the United Kingdom, we propose seven distinct experiences of economic hardship, based on the possible combinations of income poverty, material deprivation, and subjective financial stress. We use mixed- and fixed-effects linear regression models to identify whether these different economic hardship combinations are differentially associated with children's behavior problems between ages 3 and 7. We find that all economic hardship combinations, including those without income poverty, are associated with higher levels of children's behavior problems. The combination of material deprivation and subjective financial stress and the combination of all three dimensions of economic hardship are associated with the highest levels of behavior problems. Based on these findings, we argue that income poverty is an important but insufficient measure of economic hardship for children and that theory and research on the effects of economic hardship on children should consider the multidimensional nature of economic stressors for families.

BACKGROUND: Child mental health problems continue to be a major global concern, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Parenting interventions have been shown to be effective for reducing child behavior problems in high-income countries, with emerging evidence supporting similar effects in LMICs. However, there remain substantial barriers to scaling up evidence-based interventions due to limited human and financial resources in such countries. METHODS: This protocol is for a multi-center cluster randomized factorial trial of an evidence-based parenting intervention, Parenting for Lifelong Health for Young Children, for families with children ages 2-9 years with subclinical levels of behavior problems in three Southeastern European countries, Republic of Moldova, North Macedonia, and Romania (8 conditions, 48 clusters, 864 families, 108 per condition). The trial will test three intervention components: length (5 vs. 10 sessions), engagement (basic vs. enhanced package), and fidelity (on-demand vs. structured supervision). Primary outcomes are child aggressive behavior, dysfunctional parenting, and positive parenting. Analyses will examine the main effect and cost-effectiveness of each component, as well as potential interaction effects between components, in order to identify the most optimal combination of program components. DISCUSSION: This study is the first factorial experiment of a parenting program in LMICs. Findings will inform the subsequent testing of the optimized program in a multisite randomized controlled trial in 2021. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by psychiatric and behavioral comorbidities. The Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) provides valid and well-established measures of emotional, behavioral, and social problems in children and adolescents. The aim of the present study was to verify whether emotional, behavioral, and social problems were modulated by ASD symptom severity, cognitive development, gender, and age by analyzing the CBCL in a large group of children and adolescents with ASD. The results show that around 30% of participants with ASD exhibited internalizing problems and only 6% externalizing problems, with males exhibiting more internalizing problems than females. No correlation was found between CBCL scores and indices of ASD severity. However, higher CBCL Total Problems scores were found in older children and in children with lower cognitive abilities. The detection of behavioral and emotional problems allows children with ASD to undergo specific and individualized treatment that takes into account their psychopathological problems.

Background and objective: The development of objective assessment tools for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has become a hot research topic in recent years. This study was conducted to explore the feasibility and availability of virtual reality (VR) for evaluating symptoms of ADHD. Methods: School-aged children were recruited. The children with ADHD or without ADHD were assigned into the ADHD group or Control group, respectively. They were all evaluated using the Conners' Parent Rating Scale (CPRS), Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), Integrated Visual and Auditory Continuous Performance Test (IVA-CPT), and a VR test. Results: The correct items, incorrect items, and the accuracy rate of the VR test of the children with ADHD were significantly different with those of the children in the Control group. The correct items, incorrect items, total time, and accuracy of the VR test were significantly correlated with the scores of IVA-CPT (auditory attention and visual attention), CPRS (impulsion/hyperactivity and ADHD index), and CBCL (attention problems and social problems), respectively. Discussion: The results supported the discriminant validity of the VR test for evaluating ADHD in school-age children suffering from learning problems. The VR test results are associated with the commonly used clinical measurements results. A VR test is interesting for children and therefore it attracts them to complete the test; whilst at the same time, it can also effectively evaluate ADHD symptoms.
